Without makes and models and the connections you made an exact answer isn't possible,
If the HTS and TV have HDMI-ARC then turn ARC on in the TV menu and select it as your source in the HTS.
If the TV has an audio output then connect that to the HTS. Check the TV manual on how to set up the ARC or optical audio output.
If the output of the TV doesn't correspond to the one on the HTS then you will need a converter.
