Asus laptop motherboard, lacking LCD display, not booting to external display.

Hi. I just got a laptop for repair. It is completely broken and can hardly be called a laptop anymore. So basically it is just the motherboard with an i7 4710hq and a gtx 850m, the charger, keyboard and cooler, no battery, no display. With this config I really want to get it going.

So basically it had no RAM, so I looked that processor online and I saw that I needed DDR3L ram. I looked at a stick of ram I owned and it said PC3L ram so I thought that was ok. I inserted that ram into the motherboard and with some patience and shorting out the pins where the battery should have been, I managed to get it started. Everything seemed ok. The processor and GPU were getting warm, but not overheat, so that meant the internals should work.

I than connected it to an external display via VGA cable and this is where I need your help. Even though there were no issues with the motherboard, there would be no image on the external display whatsoever. I tried a lot of things: trying to boot to bios via Del, trying to press F2, Fn+F2, F8, Fn+F8 during boot, reseting the CMOS, but no luck.

What should I try next? Please help me. It would be nice if any of you could try to help me identify the issue, because there are a lot of variables. I know no way to test if the VGA port is functioning correctly, nor the processor, GPU or RAM slot (the Ram is perfectly functional, although I don't know if it is what I need).

I'm looking forward for any rsponse from you. Thanks.

Make sure to hit the key that allows your computer to transfer between the computer screen and any other screen. For example, on my computer it is F4 but might be different for you. I would imagine that the video card driver was already installed but if not, that could be the problem. Try connecting with the HDMI port to see if the VGA port needs replacing.

Hi. I have tried hitting the key required for external display, which for me is F8 or Fn+F8. Do I need to hold it or hit it repeatedly? You mentioned something about drivers. I currently try to boot into BIOS, I have no OS installed at the moment.

Can you please help me more?

If you have no OS installed than that is the problem. You would have to install Windows on your computer for drivers to install. If you have a USB Windows installer, install Windows using the Boot Menu. Can you see your computer during BIOS on the other screen?

Hi. I have no built in display. Or actually I have, but I dont't have the ribbon cable to connect it to the motherboard, so it is useless. I have no way of seeing the screen to be able to install windows. My problem is that I need display output to an external monitor, to be able to install windows, but that does not seem to work.

I need help with getting an image via an external monitor, so that I can see what I'm doing.

Have you tried HDMI? Are you building a computer? What are you trying to connect with to see the screen?

I haven't tried HDMI, because I currently have no display that connects via HDMI. No, I am not building a computer, I am trying to repair a broken laptop, from which I have only the motherboard, processor, gpu, charger and the ram that I added. I have currently tried to connect to a projector and a monitor. Niether of them showed getting any signal.

Is the VGA cable in the wrong slot of the motherboard?

No. I plugged it in correctly. The port doesn't seem to have any problem either (it is not broken, nor bent or desoldered).
