So following the massive update to windows 10 at the end of April/beginning of May my laptop's screen has suddenly got stuck at maximum brightness. When adjusting brightness either through settings or through the fn key and corresponding dim down key the slider pops up on screen to show it decreasing but the brightness remains at maximum. I've checked the drivers for the display adaptor and they say they are up to date. Help! my eyes hurt!

Solution
Try this...

1. Use the computer's search and in the box type "Type Task Scheduler" (no quotes).
2. Right click on "Task Scheduler" in the list and then select the "Run as administrator".
3. Now go into the following folders... on the left of the window... "Microsoft", then "Windows", next "Display" and finally "Brightness".
4. Here you want to double-click on "BrightnessReset" to open its Properties.
5. Go to the "Triggers" tab and select the “At log on” trigger.
6. Next click the “Edit” and see if the "Enabled" radio button is checked
7. Now click on the radio button to clear it.
8. At last you can click "OK" on the Edit trigger page and then click "OK" on the Properties page.
Try this...

1. Go into "Control Panel" and then "Power Options".

2. Click the "Change plan settings" link next to which ever plan you are currently using and then click "Change advance power settings".

3. In this new window click "Display" to open up the listings under it.

4. Now locate and click each of the following..."Display brightness", "Dimmed display brightness" and "Enable adaptive brightness".

5. Change each of these to the settings you wish, then click the "Apply" button and finally the "OK" button.

6. You should be good.

Hi,
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly, unfortunately it didn't work. Any other ideas?

Checked the drivers, the monitors driver is a generic PnP monitor driver from 2006. The Display adaptor is an Intel(R) HD Graphics driver from 2012.

If it is a driver related it might be a compatibility issue in that I have to reinstall the driver under an older OS within the compatibility settings.

Are there any other ideas before I mess around with that?

Solution
I have not seen it under another one, however that doesn't mean it isn't. Alas, if it can't be found there, I am at a loss. Short of it being an actual hardware issue, which would make it very odd timing, or a flaw in the update.

Anyone else have any suggestions?
