I am trying to setup an Onkyo AV (TX-NR509) with a soundbase (QAcoustics M2) and a Samsung monitor.

In short:

ALL AudioVisual Sources > [HDMI] > AV Receiver (Onkyo TX-NR509)

AV Receiver > [HDMI OUT] > Monitor (Samsung P277OHD)

Monitor > [Optical Audio Out] > Soundbase (QAcoustic M2)

HDMI ARC is not supported on AV / Monitor

The audio does not (yet!) work...

Any suggestions (I am a technically illiterate, and my wife who may question my expenditure returns home in 2 days...)

The receiver is supposed to be connected to speakers so if you connect all your sources to it it won't send audio into the monitor. In your situation the receiver is only acting as an HDMI input selector so just replace it with one and it will work fine.
