Hi. We've had these polk tower speakers for over 10 years now. Haven't been used loads but has had period of heavy use. Speaker started smelling burning and music was coming out very quietly (almost as if aux cable wasn't plugged al the way in on a car system. have taken apart and found the drivers are the issue and they have burnt through the cotton material padding behind. Glue has all run on component board behind and the board itself looks burnt. Am I better off buying a new set or is this fixable ? Thanks

Solution
It's not unusual for the cabinet filler or crossover board to show some signs of getting hot.
You want to check the woofers by disconnecting them from the crossover in the cabinet.
You can test each speaker with a vom

or you can connect each woofer one at a time to the directly to the amp. This isn't the best way as it could damage the amp.
Most crossover boards have hot melt glue on the components to keep them firmly mounted on the circuit board.
If the speakers work then you want to check the components on the crossover board with the VOM to see if the values are still correct.
If the woofers are blown then you can contact Polk on the price of replacements and then contact Bill at...

If the woofers are blown then you can contact Polk on the price of replacements and then contact Bill at Millersound.com that offers great rebuilding services. Then you can compare repair vs replacement cost for the entire speakers.
