So I was trying to fix an fps drop issue with a game, and the tech support suggested I update my computer's BIOS to the latest version on the manufacturer's website. Unfortunately, something must have went wrong with the BIOS flash, since after the update several problems came up with my laptop:
- cannot watch videos higher than 720p, when before I could watch 1080 with no problem. Attempts to watch high resolution video would result in lag, slow motion playing, or stuttering.
- All games have become unplayable, with extremely low (10 - 20) fps and high GPU usage. Pretty sure my phone has better performance now.
- Application loading and opening different windows becomes slower, more laggy. Entire computer becomes frozen and extremely slow after waking from sleep mode, but gets better after a restart.
Here are my laptop specs:
Toshiba Satellite L50-B
Intel Core i5-4210U CPU @ 1.70 GHz
8 GB RAM
64-bit Windows 10 Home 1709
Intel HD Graphics Family 4400
I have already tried updating display drivers, clean booting, disabling Game Mode/DVR/Superfetch/Xbox App/Windows Store etc. Defragmented hard drive, deleted temp files, tried CCleaner, even disabled Windows Defender and Malwarebytes. Ran an Intel Processor Diagnostic program from Intel, it returned no problems with the processor.
Bios update that I flashed from Toshiba website:
BIOS version 2.00 for Satellite L5x-B/S5x-B (PSKT4x/T8x/TAx/TEx, PSPQ2x/Q4x/Q6x/Q8x)

My original BIOS version was 1.70
When I flashed the BIOS, the updater gave a choice to flash from Windows, which I chose. However the updater didn't mention Windows 10 (it only mentioned Windows 7, Windows XP), perhaps this is the problem? Another important thing I noticed was that after the BIOS flash, my laptop shut down and I had to manually press the power button to turn it on again. Is this supposed to happen? From what I have read on Bios flashes this is probably a really bad thing to happen. Finally, can I fix this by flashing back to Bios 1.70 version?
