Hello Friends,

I would like to buy new laptop for home. Is 8th gen with HDD same as 7th gen with sdd.( Dell inspiron)

For me performance does not have to be top notch but if difference is big i can buy external hard drive with i7 SSD. I8 with ssd is expensive deal.

Thanks
Viren

Still depends on your workload, but the i5-8250U would generally be considered "better"..... by a decent margin.

The 7200U is a Dual Core w/HyperThreading (2c/4t), 2.5GHz base, 3.1GHz boost.
The 8250U is a Quad Core w/HT (4c/8t), 1.6GHz base, 3.4GHz boost.

For a basic web-browsing machine, the 7200U is more than capable - and the SSD is a nice addon.
For anything more intense though, the 8250U would be much "better" IMO...... you can always replace the HDD with an SSD in future.
A 7th vs 8th Gen i7?

If price is pretty much the same, personally, I'd opt for the best CPU and add an SSD later.

It'll depend on the specific CPUs and your intended use case though.
For example:
An i7-7700HQ (7th Gen) is a 4c/8t chip, base of 2.8GHz, boost of 3.8GHz

Then, an i7-8650U (8th Gen) is a 4c/8t, base 1.9GHz, boost of 4.2GHz
BUT
An i7-8809G is also an 8th Gen, 4c/8t.... higher base at 3.1GHz, same boost at 4.2GHz but has integrated Vega graphics - a substantial step 'up' from the other options.

tl;dr, it depends. 7th gen vs 8th gen isn't enough info to make a decision.

8250 has double the cores/threads. If you do stuff that could take advantage of those extra threads, it could be a fair bit faster. For basic desktop usage, the 7200u laptop would probably feel faster just because of the SSD. You can also probably buy an SSD separately and install it in the 8250u laptop for cheaper than buying it pre-configured with an SSD.
