After reviewing both the user guide and manual for that tv, it's apparently the only had the single user in mind regarding the audio output selections and only one output can be selected at a time.
The only way to do what you want to do is to pick an output, get a splitter to have 2 signal outputs and have one go to an external speaker and the other to the headphones.
It's the opposite in my visio, I use optical out and have to turn the volume all the way down so they don't conflict (when they are playing at the same time, they are slightly out of phase which is really annoying).
