I have an old Sony Vaio vgn-n38e laptop that had a faulty hard drive. I swapped it out for another drive i formatted on a mates laptop, using an external caddy. When I put the windows 7 disk in and change the boot procedure to read off dvd first nothing happens. I hear the drive attempt to read but then a message pops up stating....
Loading PBR for descriptor 2.... done.
An operating system wasn't found. Try disconnecting any drives that don't contain an operating system.
Press Ctrl alt del to restart.

Is there a problem with my bios now, not able to read the DVD drive? Normally it should load the system disk and load Windows 7.

Any help would be grateful.

Solution
Yes, I meant it is 'showing the dvd drive' in BIOS.

Have you tried putting the OS on a USB drive and try loading it through there? Some systems can be moody when it comes to DVD/CD drives.

Yes to both of those queries webworkings. I have another working dvd drive and tried that and save result. My bios even allows to enable an external drive and I've tried that with the same result. I can hear, in all the examples above, the drive spinning and it's light flash. But then it just press down. At this stage in the process with a blank formatted hard drive should the bios have a device driver to see the dvd?

If it can list the dvd drive I am assuming it can access it. Especially if starting up.
The dvd you are trying to use, how was the OS put on it? Did it come with the computer, did you get it from the manufacturer, or did you make it yourself? And if the last one, how was it made?

Thanks for your replies webworkigs btw.

When you say list it, I assume you mean in the bios? Yes it is listed there.
The windows 7 is not OEM but it has worked before for me as the original Sony had a very broken Vista on it. So I was able to list the dvd as first not drive start up with it in the drive and it loaded. Now it suits there like a mute and does nothing.

That's a good idea thanks. I will need to get a larger usb as all mine are only 2 or 4 GB. I have an old 7 disk that's got a large suite programs attached to load, so will need it. If it works I will let you know thanks. (If not I'll be back following a Sage's above :)

Hey webworkings thanks!
Your idea to copy disk to usb and not from the dvd drive worked a treat. I'm loading it from stick now.
I wonder if the bios driver for the dvd is corrupted or missing?
Thanks for your help.

And the weird thing is that disk in dvd has worked for me before on this save machine, as I've reformatted it 3times. That's why I thought corrupted bios drivers??? Not even sure you can change or update bios on it either.
