First off sorry if this is in the wrong section, there are a few elements to this post however it starts with a laptop.

Laptop is Lenovo Z70, not 100% sure on specs however I can find out if needed.

So it's my mums laptop, which a few days ago didn't boot properly. The screen displays 'preparing automatic repair' and after a few seconds goes black (however still backlit). I've left it for a while to no avail.

I guess it's best to say what I've tried and has failed to help anyone giving an answer.

1. I've tried booting off a usb stick with windows 8.1 (her current OS), which has given me issues. It takes about 2 minutes to go from the spinning dots at the bottom of the screen to the blue screen, which has install or repair on it. I clicked repair, to be presented with a blue screen for another couple of minutes, before randomly tapping the space bar, to which it brings me back to the original 'install or repair' screen. I then clicked install, thinking I may aswell try something at this point, which then brought me into the repair screen(the one with three options as if I had clicked repair).

2. Thought this may be an issue with the memory stick, so I bought a new memory stick, which gave me the same issue. Along with this, I tried using the windows 8.1 ISO then rufus, as well as making it a bootable drive directly from windows media creation tool.

3. Once in the repair screen, however using the method that was given before where is was somewhat 'glitchy' to say the least, I tried both the startup repair tool, which again gave me a black, backlit screen, along with going into the command prompt bit, and trying the rebuild bcd command.

4. When I tried the rebuild bcd command, it told me that there were no windows installations found.

5. My last attempt was to change the ram for a stick which I know is good as I use it in my personal laptop. I thought this may explain why it was taking such a long time to boot into the windows USB, as if the RAM was dead it may be going straight to secondary storage? Anyhow, it doesn't particularly matter since it didn't work.

6. I also tried using the system recovery button, which is in the NOVO menu, to which I got given error code 0xc0000158. The error code was partially what made me think of trying rebuild BCD and such like.

I'm at a bit of a loss on what to try now. I'm starting to think that it is a bad motherboard. The SSHD sounds like it is spinning up okay, so if all else fails I will probably plug that into my desktop, and get the files that my mum needs.

Any help would be massively appreciated, The data what's mostly important, but it would be nice to be able to use the laptop so she doesn't have to buy a new one.

Thanks in Advance :)

EDIT:
Something was wrong with SSHD, I plugged it inyo my desktop and had chkdsk running for 2 days straight just for the data to be assessible. Not sure if it's a fix, will probably clone the drive to another as it did start to make some weird noises
