is a 5.1 set up enough for Dolby Atmos on windows10?

Hi there,

I've got a Sony STRDN1080 (has all the bells n whistles, dolby atmos, dts:x etc) and I have my pc using my gtx1080ti hdmi to the receiver which then plugs to my TV arc port.

I play Altered Carbon via Netflix app on Windows 10 so I can make use of the Dolby Atmos feature. While the audio works, I for some reason get crackling/popping sounds loud sharp ones here in maybe....3-5 second intervals?

I have the dolby atmos app which showed me how to configure my sound properties to include dolby atmos and that didn't fix the issue.

I'm wondering if it's because I only have a 5.1 set up and not a 5.2 like I see others have.


Anyone know if that is the case?

I tried to play a movie on movie with 5.1 support using VLC player and this never happened before but now my audio cuts in and out every 2-3 seconds, I must have done something wrong with my setup for dolby atmos

The .1 refers to having one mono subwoofer output instead of 2 mono subwoofer outputs. That would not make any difference to your situation.
To use Atmos you need a 5.1.2 (two atmos speakers) system. If you don't have specific Atmos speakers that are upward firing or ceiling mounted speakers you can't do Atmos. Make sure you have the receiver set up for 5.1 and set the PC to that as well until you get additional speakers. Ceiling mount speakers will work better than the upward firing type of Atmos speaker.

awesome thank you! I thought maybe I damaged my speakers or something, this had me stressed. Went into the receiver interface and switched it from Dobly Digital to 5.1 sound space. Works without the popping noise now!
