Hi....

One more question, thanks...

How can I be sure that the operating system has,
in fact, BEEN deleted?

Background: I brought this computer to a repair
guy who said that the hard drive went bad, and if
I wanted to retrieve the data, it would cost me
"thousands of dollars." Can someone help me
out with this? Thanks, Beigle

Solution
easiest thing to do is plug the drive into another pc and see if
a) it works or not
b) if it works, is anything still on it to recover

this can be done either by connecting it internally or using an external adapter such as a usb adapter or some type of dock

the hard drive is not the operating system. the operating system is a program that is written on a drive. If the hard drive doesn't show up in the bios/setup menu, then your drive has malfunctioned. Some hard drives will go into the "click of death mode" when they fail. Platter recovery is the last resort, and really only should be performed by a data recovery company. The mean of hard drive life is 3-5 years and its recommended that you back up your data often. I would even change the hard drive after 1/2 its warranty time if its really critical that its always up (like a server)
