Bose 901 Series IV with 2 Equalizers

I hear the question a lot regarding the need to the Bose EQ with the 901 speakers. My situation is a little different. I have a ADC Sound Shaper 30 on a Marantz Receiver hooked up through the Main/Pre. Since the ADC also has a true Tape Monitor option, I have connected the Bose EQ as a Tape Mon in the ADC. The sound is great but a have a light hiss in the 901's when no music is playing. Should I be running this configuration?

That configuration is fine. You have to play with the output level of the ADC and the volume control on the Marantz to get the lowest background noise.
You always need to use the Bose EQ so it doesn't really need to be in the tape loop.
You can try running the pre out to the Bose EQ in. The Bose EQ out to the ADC input and the ADC out to the main amp input on the Marantz. It might be quieter that way.
Also if you can duplicate the EQ curve of the Bose you can implement it on the ADC and eliminate it completely.
When you use an EQ like the ADC you have to be aware that you are not getting the curve that the sliders indicate by their position. There is interaction between the sliders and dips in the frequency too. It's always better to cut gain rather than increase it. That means if you want more bass leave the low frequency sliders at 0 and reduce the rest of the range below zero instead of boosting the bass sliders.

Thanks for the quick response. I actually tried your alternate solution (Pre to Bose In, Bose out to ADC In, ADC Out to Main In) first. My current solution is much better with regards to the hissing noise and I have more flexibility around the ADC. The Sound Shaper is an amazing EQ. I would drop the 901's from my system before I would drop the ADC. With it I can make my 301's fill the room with warm sound that would not fatigue your ears.

After much adjustment, I was able to use both EQ's and take the hiss out. I started by zeroing out all equalization on the receiver, Bose EQ, and the Sound Shaper EQ. That stopped all the hissing. Then just dialed in the Sound Shaper and left the bass and treble at 0 on my receiver and the Bose EQ. The 901's sound marvelous now. I also added a 400 watt Klipsch subwoofer for that added punch. Lastly, I may consider a power amplifier since the 901's are not real efficient and love power.
