Cant figure out how to get my laptop onto surround sound.

In advance ignore my Facebook account email when I was 12 years old lol. The American idiots song.

I have a Sony Home Theater bluray/surround sound system. I'm not sure of the model atm but it has 1 of each had. Has 1 hdmi, optical, and left right audio in. The laptop has 1 HDMI and VGA (the blue prong port for video. Can't remember what it's called if it's not VGA). My TV has no optical but seemingly everything else.

I cannot figure out at all how to get the laptop onto the surround sound. I can get the Sony player to do surround sound with just an HDMI.

The Sony Web Browser sucks so bad I can't get anything online onto the web browser and actually get it to work, cause of ads and all.

I am thinking I must need something to act as a middle man but I have no idea what that would even be. I'm not very tech savvy when it comes to home theaters. This is honestly my first one and I haven't had it hooked up in 5 years so I don't remember what I did..

I'm not sure how else to describe my issue, I feel like this sounds stupid but I can't figure out how to word It I guess. Any help would be super appreciated and would save so many headaches and then I don't have to use just TV sound for laptop.

Best way is to get an HDMI audio extractor
https://www.amazon.com/ViewHD-Extractor-Support-Converter-VHD-H2HARC/dp/B00LKF6CPG
and connect it in between the Laptop HDMI out and the TV HDMI input. Connect an optical cable from the extractor to the optical input on the HTS.
You could also connect the headphone out of the laptop to the audio inputs on the HTS. You wouldn't get digital surround sound but could get Dolby Prologic surround. This only requires a cable.

Okay so i finally ordered this and got it. Now I cannot seem to get 5.1 out of my laptop even though the sound should technically be coming from the opitcal in the HTS. I'm assuming the way this works is it basically puts the optical into the HDMI so that when the HDMI is plugged INTO the laptop it also will produce optical sound. Basically my laptop is refusing to play 5.1 and only coming from front. I've tried so many things that I don't understand why nothing is working. I've set up the laptop HDMI to the extractor, then another HDMI from the extractor into the TV. And then Optical goes from the extractor to HTS optical in. I'm completely lost on this and i hope you get this reply.
