Windows 7 laptop broken screen not showing up on monitor

Hi I have a windows 7 pavilion laptop that I broke the screen on, I had been using an external monitor for the longest time, but then I tried to upgrade to windows 10 it reset and then when the laptop booted up it was on but it did not show up on the monitor or tv. Please help I would love to not have to buy a new laptop.

Try undoing the ribbon cable that feeds the laptop's screen. You haven't mentioned the model of pavilion but I'm guessing that the cable is easily accessible (under the keyboard). Reboot with external monitor attached and the laptop should be forced to use it.
