LG-60UJ7630V-ZA Smart Tv does not recognize my External Hard drive

Hi Tomshardware.

I have a odd problem with my LG tv.

I have a 1 TB Seagate Backup Plus Ultra (STEH1000201) and wanna use it with my smart tv. When i plug it in, it blinks once and then the light goes out. My TV don't recognize it at all. I then returned it and got a new one, and that one didn't work either.

I then tried to reformat it with NTFS and still nothing. I tried with the software from Seagate and reformat it that way - Still nothing.

I then tried something that makes this really weird... My sister have a Seagate Backup Plus 1 TB (STDR1000201) and when i plug that one in.. it worked. I did then try to put the hard drive that didn't work and plugged it into another TV and it worked.

I have tried to clone my sisters hard drive with the one that didn't work and that didnt work either.

Im getting alittle frustrated about this and i hope someone here can help me.

I wonder if it's a power issue. From LG "Please use only USB storage devices formatted with the FAT32 or NTFS file system provided by Windows OS. It is recommended that you use an external USB HDD with a rated voltage of 5 V or less and a rated current of 500 mA or less. It is recommended that you use a USB hub or hard disk drive with a power supply". Good Luck!

That was also my first concern. What's strange though is that my sisters hard drive is almost identical to mine, atleast the power draw should be the same. Can't see that it's power that's the problem. Thanks though.

Anyone else have a solution?

If your drive does not have option for external power supply - get a powered USB hub, and plug your drive thru it.

Your TV is rated for 5VDC, 500ma. If your drive needs 510ma, and your sister' needs 490ma - here you go.
"Almost" identical means nothing - you don't know whats under the cover.

I have had the same problem. I have had mine plugged into my TV for years and can't recall what I did to it. I have about 800GB of data on mine but I can't read it with my Mac. I transferred this to another mac and reformated it to I believe exFat (which is for both Windows and Mac). I then transferred the files back and it does not work again. I believe it has to be strictly a windows format (the old kind, win 32 or something like that) The problem now is I don't think I can transfer the files from my Mac to this HDD now as its sticky a Windows drive now. Hi, I had the same problem was not detecting my 2TB hard drive for some reason LG TVs does not use drives formatted as GPT converted it too MBR and everything is working again.
