What electrical problems cause my Gateway laptop not to turn on

It's an old laptop I haven't used in a while and I want to turn it on and it won't what are the possible problems?

If it does nothing when pressing the power button (no screen, no status LED, no fans spinning) you probably have no power. So check the battery. Try to borrow a multimeter and measure voltage.
