Should I get a new windows surface pro or a designated drawing monitor for drawing?

Is drawing anywhere worth the reduced space per dollar?

or save a bit more and get the newest surface.

I would like to game on the go and I don't think i'll ever buy a laptop. So there's that. But how is the drawing experience in comparison to something designed for drawing and no compute.

Well if you want to game on the go then that means you are looking at the Surface Book as opposed to the Surface Pro. Pro is the tablet with only onboard Intel iGPU so not much game performance. Surface Book can come equipped with a discreet GPU inside. Though neither one is going to be actually good at games. They simply aren't designed with that in mind.

Should also note both devices have a smaller screen then the stand alone device you are looking at. So if screen size matters to you there is that as well.

Gabe over at Penny Arcade has had all the Surface variations over the years if you want to check out his quick reviews. In short he finds them good for when he's on the road but not a preferred work device when he has access to his desktop setup. He does consider the Surface Studio (the all-in one desktop) to be a good replacement device for a drawing tablet + desktop if you want to consolidate a desktop environment.

I was in the same boat as you a week ago.
The ideal device that can do everything (game + draw + productivity) for me was the 15 inch surface book 2, but I did not want to spend 2500_ USD on it.
I also was tired of windows updates / always some kinds of bugs . Most of the windows apps are also not optimized for pen support.

So I decided to get an iPad pro 12.9 inch. Its super portable and the pen / pen support in apps (Procreate, Affinity Photo etc) is way better than on windows. The battery life is also really good and so is performance.

I have been using a Surface Book for the past two years and I find it a very good solution for my portable and desktop needs. I teach physics in high school and I use the pen to draw out and write down solutions that all the class can see on the big screen. Sometimes I pass the "clipboard" around and have the students show their solutions to the class. I find the pen works well in multiple programs, like OneNote, MS Office, sketchpad, screen sketch, etc.

My Surface Book has the power to do the work I have in creating lesson plans, editing videos, preparing instruction, etc. and yet it works well with the pen also. I connect it to a large monitor at my desk and having two screens makes working with multiple windows very easy. My Surface Book has saved me a lot of money as I did not have to purchase a laptop AND a tablet with a pen. It's also easier to carry around one Surface Book than two devices.

If you are familiar with WIndows, need to use a pen, and want to be portable, the Surface Book is the best solution.
