Did you check to see what programs are running in the background? Anything running from the moment you start Windows can be draining resources.

I would only advise this if you know what you are doing and are very careful what you check/uncheck of the listed programs, as it can give you no end of problems and grief if you don't.

Bring up your "Start" and "Search" (aka to search for programs and files) and type in "msconfig" (without the quotes). Launch it from the list of files (it should be the first one.) and then go to the "Startup" tab. Now go through the list and uncheck anything that you don't want running. ONLY DO THIS with programs you know and know you won't need.

Once you are done click "Apply" and then "OK" and restart the...

AGAIN, I must be clear, it is important you know what you are doing and are very careful as to what you turn off in there. So keep that in mind.

After two weeks of struggling with every possible test and countless blog posts + 3 complete resets of Win10, here's what finally worked. Open the laptop, disconnect the battery, then do a hard reset (power+volume down, 20 seconds). reconnect the battery and button up the case. Laptop has been working perfectly.

My wifes Asus X540L kept freezing, I deleted the Asus ATK program, the USB program and Microsofts One drive program, all three via Control Panel, then Add and Remove programs . The laptop now works perfectly. The issue appears to be the Asus programs causing software conflicts.
