Microphone is not picking up sound

I recently built a pc and am having troubles with the mic. I'm using a pair of headphones with a microphone attached to it(Apple headphones). I bought an audio splitter and connected it to the mic and headphone jack in the front of my case. I am able to hear everything, but my microphone isn't able to pick up any sound. My driver says that there is a connection at the front mic jack and a troubleshoot shows that there is no problems. Please help.

if you are trying to connect to the front panel jacks, try rechecking your frontpanel audio pins if they are attached properly. recheck your manual. if its from the rear, then make sure you are connecting your mic jack properly. you can tell easily by the color anyways or the mic symbol on the connector. also maybe try disabling your audio driver and reenabling to try to refresh its settings. or try to get the latest audio driver for your motherboard and reinstalling.

Also make sure you are using the correct type of splitter - - some of them are just to allow you to split a headphone jack (not a combo jack) in to two jacks so two pairs of headphones can be used - - that type of splitter is totally useless for your needs.

To split a combo jack in to separate mic/headphone jacks, you need one of these:

Oh, and by the way, a pair of headphones with microphone attached is called a "Headset".
