Having a problem with the battery charging on my hp dv7-4285dx laptop. When I plug the charger in, the battery charges for maybe a minute or 2 then it cuts out altogether. If I unplug the charger and wait maybe an hour or so and plug it back in charging will begin again, but only for the brief time period.

I've replaced both the battery and the charger but the problem remains exactly the same. Wiggling the charger tip when it's plugged into the laptop has no effect. I ran the 'HP PC Hardware Diagnostics' utility and the battery and charger (when it was charging, anyway) tested fine. I updated anything BIOS related from HP's website, but again no effect on the problem. I also removed then re-installed 'Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery' in Device Manager, but no improvement.

During the week of so I've been playing with it, I noticed the charging cuts out sooner when power demands are greater (when laptop is firing up or running vs when it's shut down). If the laptop is starting up or running, charging barely lasts a minute. If it is shut down and the battery charge is low, charging will last maybe a few minutes. If battery is nearly (or fully) charged while the laptop is shut down, charging usually continues indefinitely.

Just wondering if someone might have a clue what's going on. I mentioned the problem on hp's support forum, but the site is next to worthless.

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

if you have a volt meter check your old charger and new one make sure there in spec. your error is low power from the charger or the mb. if your unit is under warranty send it in. also google that model see if there any recall /calss action lawsuit. if it out of warranty look online under parts see if there a small power board that can be replaced or it the whole system board.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I did check the voltage and it is right around what it should be. Unfortunately, the laptop's out of warranty by a few years. A Google search on that model didn't give me anything helpful =(
