Do laptop refurbishers run software tests on hardware to gauge CPU, GPU, hard drive performance? Do refurbishers run software to test the hardware like NotebookCheck.com does for laptops. Software like, PassMark Performance Test, SPECViewPerf 11, Crystal Disk Mark, Aida64, or PCMark Vantage. It would be helpful to consumers if refurbishers posted critical test scores for the machines they are selling so the consumer can have some type of quantification against an average of some type.

refurbished hardware, specifically for this discussion; a laptop done by manufacturers selling a refurbished units in store are 99% of the time, unit that were a return a by customer, they took back, repaired and repackaged in brown box and resold at lower price.
The "failure" is never discussed unless you know someone at the manufacturer itself, and each laptop refurbishment is individually a different case each time, may it be a bad cpu, motherboard, video chip, bad ram, a simple connection broken or wire damaged that was replaced. you will never find out what was done to a refurbished except that as it is resold it is as "expected" to perform as a new unit, but by law cannot be resold after a repair was done, as a new unit, but only as a refurbished unit. 99% of the time it is the same as a new unit perhaps with some scratches on a case as visible difference.
also note most companies because they hard to repair the unit and forced to sell it as refurbished, will 99% of cases only have a 90 days warranty to cut their costs.

El Paladin, you have provided much insight on why things are as they are. The day will come when a Refurb standard will be introduced by a player who will offer software test results on refurb machine to consumers and businesses to simplify their purchasing experience. If a Refurbisher is not listed in a refurb co-op or if their machines have substandard scores then they will not make the sale. I think Amazon is a player who could centralize a refurb standard similar to the ISO -9000-3. Thank you for your reply.

oh there are companies 3rd party that make a test bench software (that test all components). and if the repair falls into parameters considered acceptable, it passes. but these companies are licensed by specific manufacturer (rarely for example a company working for dell will do any work for hp) and closed lipped about the technology used.
I used to work for Samsung Intl. and we used such services for Laser Printers, Ink Jet printers and Laptops. collected RMA's stack on a pallet, shipped away, used returned refurbished in plain brown boxes, whe put back on shelf for a lower price.
refurbishing is very predominant in the cell phone industry. Newegg, fry's, and many other sellers used refurnished electronics. Phone carriers are the worst, after you buy your 1000$ iPhone x, say you break it, think they give you back a brand new one in exchange.. no. you get a refurbished unit.
as for amazon, they are not more in control of such things than any other reseller, nor will they ever will be, corporations like Samsung, IBM, Apple etc. are not going to take insight about how to run their business from a online sale shop. Amazon doesn't create, they just centralize shopping for the world, and sell TONS of refurbished products at higher prices than anyone else does. Amazon is a thief, I never use them for anything, because 99% of the time the competition be local or online are priced lower.
