Hello,

I like using the keyboard & mouse & VLC Media Player to watch movies. I have many video files on several hard drives and I have use my HP laptop to watch them using the DisplayPort on the laptop connected to the HDMI in the TV with an adapter cable. I also do the same when at my girlfriend's place with her LG Plasma TV, never a problem using either Win 7 or Win 10.

Three weeks ago I bought a Samsung 4K UDT Smart TV to replace my old Scepter TV. With it, when I connect to the HDMI I get great video copy of the Laptop screen but the audio plays only from the laptop speakers. The issue is the necessary audio driver does not appear in the Windows Audio devices widget when connected to as it turns out, any Smart TV... If however, I reconnect to the Scepter the audio driver immediately appears in the Playback Device widget in Windows and I have sound with picture, as always.

I returned the Samsung and brought my laptop and adapter cable to the store to find which TV would work and none of the Smart TVs gave the signal to the laptop that it was connected to the TV so the driver never was engaged. Apparently the problem is not the Samsung, it is an issue with all Smart TV's it seems. I tried a LG, Magnavox, Samsung and Vizio, all with the same zero result. My girlfriend's computer had exactly the same situation, hers is a different model of HP but also has the DisplayPort; It works fine on the Scepter but not the Smart TV.

I contacted Samsung and they had no idea what is the problem saying if I could hear audio when watching TV, then there is no problem. I finally gave up with them when they wanted me to return it for repair. The tech was trying to help but couldn't grasp the issue. I asked on the HP forum and didn't get a solution so perhaps someone here knows what the cause of the issue is and if there is an easy solution.

So for one; why does the PC via HDMI not work on Smart TVs but it does on older TVs with HDMI?

Is there something I need to use as an added interface?

If there is no answer to the above, what is my simplest way to use a laptop to provide content to a Smart TV that is not terribly expensive?

Thanks!
