whats the best way to record (copy) films from tv in HD as copy restrictions nowadays usually prevent this leaving only lower definition options available -

Solution
There is no way to copy anything from a TV. TVs don't have video outputs of any kind.
You can use an external over the air tuner with PVR functions to record programs. The best ones like the TIVO or Channel Master are not cheap but there are others that are. Some have multiple tuners.
If you watch TV with a tuner card on your PC they can be recorded too.
Don't know how legal these methods are.

hi- thanks for that - i know about the hurdles that have been put in the way regarding copying off air - not like in days past where you just plugged your recording medium into the back of the tv with no restrictions or when we used to use vhs with built in tuners or recorders with with dvd recorder facilities - what i want is to be able to move the file to my computer for watching at a time that suits me and not like in the past where we have to watch it within a certain time - no doubt an external tuner would only allow a lower definition output for recording and not an HD type- these restrictions were put in place because of the movie money grubbers thought that people would copy films and sell them - which certainly is not my purpose- i just need a way of copying the odd old film i cannot get on dvd that is all and to be able to watch it whenever i like-
