RCA Sound Bar issues [SOLVED]

I have a 55" Samsung 4K Smart TV, Samsung 4K Blu Ray/DVD play and RCA sound bar. The DVD player is hooked into the TV using HDMI. I've used an optical cable to connect the TV to the sound bar. I get sound through the sound bar when watching a disc, but anything via any of the "apps" on the TV (Amazon, Hulu, etc.) there is no sound and I have to revert back to the TV speakers. I would assume that the optical cable would work for both the Blu Ray player and the TV, yet I get no sound when watching just the TV.

Solution
It doesn't sound like you have an antenna hooked up so you can check if over the air TV audio outputs to the soundbar.
You can try changing the audio output type in the TV menu.
You can try changing the audio output type in the app if possible.
Some TVs won't send audio from apps outside the TV and yes it's stupid.
An external HDMI connected streamer would solve the problem in any case.

Hmmmm. I'll try using the "app" from the DVD player instead of the TV and see if that works. If so, your " Some TVs won't send audio from apps outside the TV and yes it's stupid." will be the cause.

I have yet to purchase a digital antenna, and most likely will not do so. This setup is primarily for movies and playing games once the console is added to the mix.

And bingo! Using the app through the Blu Ray player results in sound to the sound bar. Much thanks to americanaudiophile for pointing me in the proper direction.
