Bose 501s are passive speakers so you can't connect them directly to any TV. You will need an amp or receiver with optical audio input. If you have one but it doesn't have optical input you will need an optical to analog converter, Check if your TV can be set to output in PCM. If not then you need one that accepts a 5.1 input.
Thanks for that info. I’m not up on all the current technology so, I don’t have an amplifier and the tuner we have is about 40 yrs old. I’m still learning the new tv so not sure about the PCM. Is there not a cheaper way to hook up the Bose 501 such as a small converter box and cables? Or, if I want to keep the Bose, is the only way a new amp/ tuner? Thanks
