Hi moved into a new flat and it has an old surround sound setup (panasonic sa-ht 335) and a new Samsung tv. The tv has component, hdmi and optical audio. When I setup the component I get no sound, where as when connect the tv via and aux to audio L+R I get only Stereo.

Is there anyway I can get 5.1 surround sound?

Solution
If SA-HT335 does not have any digital inputs, the only sound you'll get from external sources will be stereo. There might be "sound modes" where all speakers will produce sound in that mode.
Component video gets the picture from the HTS DVD to the TV. It doesn't get audio from the TV to the HTS.
Your HTS only has analog audio inputs. If your TV doesn't have any other audio outputs (not inputs) other than optical then you will need an optical to analog converter to connect them. Check the TV manual on how to configure the optical audio output.
Set the HTS to a surround mode that is made for a stereo input such as Dolby Prologic.

My mistake I should have clarified the surround sound doesnt have a optical cable or hdmi connector, its has a L + R audio, conponent, s video and scart.

I cant connect an optical audio to the receiver.

Im currently getting stero from two if the speakers using the L+R to an aux connected to the tv.
