Hi all - I'm not sure that this is the right place to post this, but I can't see a better alternative.

Firstly I must say that I am not, in any way, computer literate when it comes to the 'back-room' stuff concerning settings and that sort of thing. So if you are good enough to try to help me with this problem, please keep the answers as 'idiot-guide' as possible. Thank you.

The history to this is that I live in a shared house with 7 other people. We have a sky router that give us all WiFi connection to the Internet.

A little while ago we started having problems in that the connection kept going down. Sky decided it was the router and gave us another one. As this didn't solve the problem they sent out an engineer who suggested that the telephone wire between the wall socket and the router was damaged. The router was moved and a new wire supplied.

This seems to have solved the problem as I am now using the house WiFi to connect to the Internet and post on this forum. The problem is, I am having to use my laptop to post to this forum as I can't get my PC connected to the network.

Before the problems the PC was connected and, barring the previously mentioned disconnects, evrything was fine. Now, however, when I try to connect the PC to the Internet the following occurs -

I click on the little Internet icon down in the bottom right hand corner of my task bar and the list box that should show available networks comes up. So far so good.

The problem here is that there is only one available network shown and that is the one offered by the old router that is no longer in the house. The new router is not shown.

The curious thing is, when I click on the 'Network and Internet Settings' link at the bottom of the list box and then go to 'WiFi' and then to 'Manage known networks' I can see the new router listed, but not the old one.

I am running Windows 10 on both my laptop and my PC and they are both running the Home edition (64 bit).

I think what I need is some kind soul to check whatever setting should be set to see if they are correct. So, like I said earlier, simple instructions and questions are requested please.

I look forward to receiving your replies and thank you in advance for your help.

Regards

Solution
Try this....

1. Go to "Control Panel".

2. Next go to "Network and Internet" and then "Network and Sharing".

3. Now click on "Manage Wireless Networks".

4. On this screen, remove all wireless connections by "right clicking" on it and select "Remove network" from the drop down menu.

5. After doing this, close the open windows and reboot the computer.

6. Once the computer is fully reloaded, scan for the "WiFi networks".

7. Click on the available network that you want to access and select "connect".

8. It takes a moment, but then you will be asked to give a password for your WiFi connection. Type in the password and click the "connect" button.

It should now be connected.

NOTE: If this doesn't work, you may want to reset your modem/router, and then once it is fully loaded again, repeat the above steps.

If this doesn't work, test seeing if your laptop will connect via Ethernet. If so, then your WiFi card may be going. You can either look to replace it/have it replaced, or get an external (plugs in via USB) WiFi card.

Another way to try it is to...

1. Go to "Settings".
2. Click on "Network & Security" and then click on "WiFi".
3. Now click "Manage known networks".
4. Select the WiFi connection you want to remove.
5. Click the "Forget" button.
6. After doing this, close the open windows and reboot the computer.
7. Once the computer is fully reloaded again go to "Settings".
8. Click on "Network & Security" and then click on "WiFi".
9. Now click "Manage known networks".
10. Click "Add a new network" and enter the network name.
11. Using the drop-down menu, select the "network security type".
12. Check the "Connect automatically" option.
13. Now check the "Connect even if the network is not broadcasting" option and click "Save".

Once you have completed these steps, whenever the device is within range of that particular network, it should automatically connect to it.

Hi Webworkings - Many thanks for your reply.

I've just tried the lower set of instructions in your answer as that is the one that matches my system most out of the two. The following happened.

For illustration purposes, I'm going to call my network Web1234.

When I went into "Manage known networks" I found 2 network names. One was my current one and the other was named Web1234 2. Odd! A second network to the same router?

I did exactly as you instructed up to and including no 13.

As I didn't know the different, the first time I tried I had the 'Security type' set to WEP. When I clicked on 'Save' it said 'Couldn't add the new network'.

Next I tried with the 'Security type' set at Open. This time the red message said 'A network with the same name already exists', but there is no sign of it on the list that is accessed from the right side of the Task Bar. There is, however, the option to click on the previous router that is no longer in the house and of which there is no mention on the WiFi>Manage known networks list just as I said in my first post.

Then I tried with the security setting as WPA2-Personal AES and got the same response as in the paragraph above - 'A network with the same name already exists'.

Then I tried with the security setting as WPA2-Enterprise AES and got the same response as in the paragraph above - 'A network with the same name already exists'.

Then I tried with the security setting as 802.11xWEP and got a couple of other drop down boxes containing options that I know nothing about. So I didn't even try.

The curious things as I see them are -

a) The presence of the old router on the system. Could it be blocking me adding the new one and how can I delete it completely from the system?

b) The message from the PC that there is a network of the same name and the new router, but I can't see it on either the 'Manage known network' list or on the list accessed from the task bar via the little concentric quarter circles button.

Once again, many thanks for your reply and I look forward to hearing from you again.

Kind regards

Hi Webworkings

FYI I have just clicked on the concentric circles and the list has come up showing both the old and the new networks. Under the new it say's 'Connecting' and under the old it says 'Secured'.

I clicked on the new connection and there was a button saying 'Connect'. So I clicked that. It has now come back saying 'Unable to connect to this network'.

Just thought you'd like/need to know.

Kind regards

Hi Webworkings

Well, while what I did earlier didn't seem to work at the time. Since then another network appeared on the list with a name the same as the new network except it had '-EXT' on the end. So having nothing to lose I clicked on it, entered the password and, hey ho, I have Internet!!

How it all came about, I have no idea, but it has. Perhaps what you got me to do cleared something out and made way for the new connection. Don't know, don't care. I am connected so that's all that matters.

So, thank you very much for helping me. I really do appreciate your efforts.

Kind regards
PaulEamonn
