edit: seems like the issue is with my laptop, the cord I use or the port...thing on the back of my monitor since I can still connect my Xbox and use it

My laptop is as far as I know, am HP Stream that's about 2 years old running windows 8 the desktop monitor is also HP around 8 years old.

For the past few months my laptop screen has been broken and ive been using a dvi to hdmi (or is it hdmi dvi? Laptop is hdmi, desktop monitor is dvi) cord to use said laptop. Since I figured out how to get it working the first time, any issues have been fixed in a minute or two.

But today/yesterday I let the battery on my laptop run out (somewhat common when I leave the house for longer than an hour or two) and when I tried to start the screen sharing again it wouldn't work.

My laptop screen is totally busted (rarely can I see tiny bits of what's on the screen) so I dont know what's actually showing up.

Ive tried pressing F4 (the screen share button) and using the arrow keys tel select the options I know are there (but can't properly see. Can see when the little menu thing pops up a bit), tried holding it down, and holding the fn and f4 keys down together.

As far as I know the desktop monitor has worked in the past 24 hours since I also use it for my Xbox. When I unplug the hdmi end it says check vise cable, when I plug it in it says monitor is going to sleep (on desktop).

I know I need to replace it. Trying to figure out when the repair shop in town is open so I can call them to ask about an estimate. Did find a tutorial thing that should help if I need to do it myself
