ARC connection to an outdated Yamaha AV receiver

I have a Sony Bravia KLV-40W672E and an old Yamaha RX-V657 Av Receiver. My TV has an ARC output but my receiver doesn't have any HDMI inputs or outputs. I really want to hear the audio through my sound system rather than the inbuilt TV speakers.
Please provide some suggestions.

Best option is to use an HDMI audio extractor.

Connect that to the HDMI-ARC input on the TV and turn ARC on in the TV menu. TV should be set to output in surround sound (usually Bitstream).
Connect the digital out of the extractor to the receiver. Follow the receiver manual on how to set that input up.
