Hooking up the optical audio cable should be all you need to do as long as you have your speakers hooked up properly and you have your inputs setup right. So I would assume you are getting some sound from your speakers, just not from the TV. This would tell you if you hooked up your speakers correctly
Check the receiver and see if the optical audio signal has a different input. It may be a setting like "digital audio" or it may even be "video one" even though you are just using audio. Same for the TV, check the audio input in the TV menu. There may be an optical audio input you have to switch it too. Most of today's hardware will recognize you have put in an optical audit and switch automatically, but not all of them do.
If that does not work, provide the model of the receiver and the TV and I will take a look at it.
