so I need a laptop that can output 4k 60hz. it is NOT going to be used for gaming. it will be used for basic windows 10 operations, file management, very basic picture editing and uploading files to cloud services, using discord to chat, and some youtube videos and html5 web browsing.

any suggestions? ideally i'd like to spend less than $1k

Solution
A 7th generation (Kaby Lake) Intel Core i3/i5/i7 CPU with the integrated Intel HD 620 is capable of playing back 4k video at up to 60 FPS (60Hz). If you want to output the video at 60Hz, then both the laptop and the display (PC monitor or HDTV) must have a HDMI v2.0 input / output port. If either the laptop or the display only has a HDMI v1.4 port, then the 4k video will only be displayed at 30Hz.

Solution
Any modern laptop with an integrated Intel HD graphics core should be able to output 4k video at 60Hz as long as the laptop has a HDMI 2.0 port. If the laptop only has a HDMI 1.4 port, then video would be limited to 30Hz. Naturally, I recommend you purchase a laptop with either a 7th generation Core i3/i5/i7 CPU with the Intel HD 620 graphics core, or the recently released 8th generation Core i3/i5/i7 CPUs with the Intel UHD 620 graphics core.

such a silly question. any laptop with 4K display supports 60hz refresh rate. The question should be, - WHY some laptops with 4K display supports only 60hz??? its making me not only uncomfortable but freaking mad! Dude, if you need 4K 60hz output , dont buy laptop with 4K display, just buy any laptop with Nvidia or Amd video adaptors, they both (Nvidia and AMD) by default supports 4K and ALL refresh rates, including but not limited to 60hz

Ideally you should start your own thread. However, you probably have the display set to duplicate which will keep the resolution between the two panels the same. Change the setting to extend, or display only on the 1080p screen and you should then be able to set 1080p.

Is there a way to either upgrade the HDMI port to 2.0 or convert it if it is a 1.4 port? I'm facing this issue currently.
