Laptop is shutting down randomly, I have sent it back to Dell twice within the past month, the first time they sent it back, they had broken the right-click on the touchpad, I noticed this right away and sent it back, they fixed what they broke but they still didn't fix the shutting down problem. I went into event viewer and can copy a log though I'm not sure if people here would need the whole log or just parts, or if it is secure to post a log file The laptop is a year old and the warranty expires Oct 12. The shut downs just say 'shutting down', but it is not a 'blue screen of death'. In the event log a server was mentioned but I don't think I'm running a server, I only use the computer for myself.

It passes all the diagnostic hardware tests and I have updated the drivers on the dell site and have done my windows updates. I know some things about computers and have been helped by your site before sometimes just from searching, but haven't had any luck this time. I don't feel like I would know what I was doing to try and open it up and 'reseat' the memory or work on the hardware, but I definitely could follow instructions as far as software.
I copied the specs from a much longer file called dxdiag.txt, if someone could direct me as far as the 'event viewer' or any other log that might help I would appreciate it. I looked in the event viewer log I created to find anything relevant, but these messages are beyond what I know. This isn't the whole log, I have no idea what it means :

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions I would greatly appreciate as I am starting to lose faith in dell being able to help me, and the fact that they have had the laptop twice already, returned it once with a broken right clicker and never fixed the original problem. If you need a certain log or anything, just let me know and I will do my best to follow the instructions and post what you need, thanks so much!

I dont know whats going on. but one line in there stated that[ "Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-Processor-Power 37 (7) The speed of processor 3 in group 0 is being limited by system firmware. The processor has been in this reduced performance state for 14 seconds since the last report. " that sounds like thermal throttling from overheating. make sure you are playing on hard surface if that dont help maybe a laptop cooling pad. if that still does not help, warranty it for overheating.

Thanks for your reply. These event viewer reports are daunting and lengthy. I will try the hard surface thing. By chance I plugged in the old adapter, the square battery charger thing (I had bought a new one because the third prong in the plug had broken, so I switched out the old adapter with the new plug just to try) and it hasn't shut down all the way since which is good but it still fades to black occasionally as if it is going to sleep even with the settings saying stay awake and still does this weird flash of light for no reason occasionally. Probably have to use the 'add -on' warranty, not from manufacture, I just feel like Dell ran the hardware tests (I ran the ones on the computer) and reinstalled the OS , they likely did open up the case since they cleaned it up but they don't go into much detail in their report.

There has to be something that is causing either the shut downs or the 'fade to sleep' or the bright light flash. I do have speedfan and will keep track of the heat factor but it doesn't physically feel hot. I'm not a real gamer like probably a lot of people are here,(gen x mom) I've played a few on facebook or a few 'hidden object' microsoft games but mostly use it for browsing, word processing, listening to audio. Sure it is not a super expensive machine but it wasn't the cheapest one either. Well thanks for your suggestions, I will try that as well as continuing to look on the site for these various laptop issues.
