I can't say which is best, I'll leave that up to the community :) But I can tell you that Avast Free provides a lot more than "basic" protection, and does not require a second program be installed to provide both protection against traditional viruses and new malware, ransomware, etc. Happy to provide additional info or links if you're curious to learn more.

Except you forget to mentioned Free/Paid version benefits. There are only antivirus and no anti-malware software, what about in browser solution? VirusVanish???? Never heard of that one, Bitdefender has plenty of issues and has been digging themselves a hole recently. Webroot is worse than Avira and Webroot. Your "article" does not provide enough information for the user to make a choice, this is a list of "things".

Regardless if it is me or someone else that has a problem, antivirus software shouldn't have issues. And it is not just one user (me). Discounting all of the experience that I have had with these solutions and plenty of people who I had to fix and deal with problems caused by incompetent updates, inadequate tech support, bad software, some people are reporting the same thing.

Want to know about protection? Three layers. Antivirus, anti-malware, and in-browser solution.

Get Kaspersky, Avast, Avira, Comodo for anti-virus. Malwarebytes or Adwcleaner for anti-malware. uBlock, in-browser solution to prevent ad-spread malware. This is the combination for free, that you can use to protect yourself, with well known and established vendors.

If you want to help, people protect themselves, provide a reasoning and solutions. Just antivirus alone won't protect you entirely. No antivirus software will. Education is the key. My tip would be to be aware of what you are browsing and downloading. Do not click suspicious links, avoid shady files. Additionally, be careful with emails, a lot of malware is spread through fake/malicious emails. That is the best way of being safe out there.

If you're using free versions than you'd have to use multiple software to get the job done. If you are using paid versions e.g. Internet Security package then it'd handle all your needs. I used webroot secure anywhere and I didn't have to install rest of software.
