I just purchased a new hdd to replace one that failed on my desktop pc and before I install it have some questions.

I plan to restore my macrium back up to it.

Will the new hdd have to be formatted or will the macrium restore process eliminate the need for a formatting?

My old OS was W7 What can I expect after the hdd is installed and I turn the PC on?

How will I access the connected external back up drive?

Do I click on the macrium disk partition file that was created during my last macrium backup?

How do I start the restore process

Thank you for your help

Solution
The Macrium Rescue CD is pretty generic. It should work on any system.

Are either of these systems actually working? If so, plug that external into it, and verify that the Macrium Image is actually there.

Have you created a Macrium Rescue CD or USB?

How exactly did you create the Macrium Backup?

Assuming a correctly created Macrium Image on the external drive, simply boot from your Macrium Rescue CD or USB.
It will prompt you to select the Image to restore, and the drive to restore it to.
No formatting of the drive needed...Macrium will do whatever is necessary.

thank you very much for your response.

I have two pc's a desktop and a laptop. Both have macrium image files on their respective external hard drive backups

The macrium rescue disk I am using to restore the desktop's image file on a new hdd was made on my laptop but loaded to my desktop via its dvd drive. I never made a dedicated rescue disc for my desktop.

Although the macrium rescue disk loaded okay on my desktop it cannot find the desktop's external backup, where the image file was loaded. I suspect this is because the rescue disc was made on my laptop.

What if any options do I have to access the image file on my desktop's external hdd?

Again thank you very much for your help

Its there but when I browse to find the external drive containing it in macrium reflect it will not find the ext drive
Any ideas as to why external back up can't be found by rescue disk

No idea.
You're booting from the Macrium Rescue CD?

Possibly try a different USB port?

EDIT: Try a USB 2.0 vs USB 3.0 port
