Hi guys!
I have a very strange problem with my laptop screen :/
My laptop has both Ubuntu and W10, and when I turn it on the screen is now pitch black: I can't see the (toshiba) splash screen, nor the grub OS list.
HOWEVER, if I select Ubuntu option (I know the position in the list), the screen soon lights up and everything works fine! The same does not happen if I choose W10.
So it cannot be an hardware problem, as the screen works on Ubuntu.
Also, if I plug and external monitor to the RGB port I can see both the boot splash screen and W10.
Using an external monitor I've looked at the BIOS, but I haven't seen anything that explains this strange behavior (and I did't change anything in the BIOS before anyway)
Any help you can give is much appreciated! Thanks in advance!!!
Paulo

UPDATE of my previous post :

I have made a recovery USB while it was hooked up on the external display and reinstalled Windows. It worked normally for three or four booting procedures, so I went home where I don't have an external monitor. But then, you've guessed it, back to black. After a couple of off/on/off/on/off/..../on I managed to get it up and running. By the way, I sometimes close the lid right after I turn it on and then after a couple of seconds open it. One of those times the screen was on. (Don't know if this is of the essence at all)

So, then, I found on a forum somwhere that the users started reporting problems after the update of Intel 520 drivers version 15.46 and that the version 15.45 was fine. So, I found those...

Hi Andy, thanks for the reply.
I'm afraid this doesn't work - the problem is not as simple as just switching between screens.
It looks like the laptop screen is not recognized during boot nor W10, but strangely (and thankfully) it is recognized if I (blindly) boot into Ubuntu. And I don't understand how this can be.

Were you ever able to solve this problem? Have the exact same issue. :-/

Hi blankmac
Fortunately the problem was solved, but unfortunately I'm not able to tell you exactly what solved it. My guess is that it had something to do with a MSWindows update. Using an external monitor I kept using the laptop, and a couple of weeks of "black laptop screen", it started working perfectly again. Using an external screen try also to check your graphics driver properties regarding the use of multiple monitors. In my case, I believe the problem was that, somehow, the OS (or BIOS?) assumed that the primary screen would be the external, instead of the laptop screen. Interestingly UBUNTU (my laptop is a double boot machine) worked fine all the time, activating the laptop LCD.
Hope you get your laptop working soon too!

Thanks for the reply. Still not working for me I'm afraid. I have another question for you if you can remember. When I boot windows on the external display and check the device manager, the internal display is not even detected. Was that the same for you? (Linux and OS X detect it fine and work normally)

Yes, that was true for me also: booting from Win10 the internal display was not detected. You could also see this by trying to switch between screens (Fn+F5 in my laptop): internal display was not available. This is another reason why I think it was problems with updates (although I don't understand how Win10 could be affecting the boot screen). My suggestion is to wait some days, use the external monitor, do an Win10 update, and turn off Win10 fast startup (intuitively I think this is also relevant).
Best luck!

ASUS K501UX Notebook

I have the exact same problem. Ubuntu works, Windows and booting does not. Also, external screen works but there is no option to change to a laptop screen. I have tried BIOS update, drivers update etc.

Now, sometimes when I turn off and on and off and on and off and on...it starts working and boots into windows. I don't turn it off but instead put it to standby and most of the time there was no problem. And I think it also had something to do whether it was on battery or cable when it goes to standby.

But lately nothing helps, once it goes off or to standby it usually does not come back.

Unfortunately I still haven't found a solution. Just posting here if someone manages to find one.

EDIT: Do you have a dual graphics card system? Just tried again to do something and I think it's maybe a clash between nVidia and Intel drivers. I disabled/enabled devices in the dev manager and once I enabled Intel it showed a picture on my screen, but after reboot it was back to black.

UPDATE of my previous post :

I have made a recovery USB while it was hooked up on the external display and reinstalled Windows. It worked normally for three or four booting procedures, so I went home where I don't have an external monitor. But then, you've guessed it, back to black. One of those times the screen was on. (Don't know if this is of the essence at all)

So, then, I found on a forum somwhere that the users started reporting problems after the update of Intel 520 drivers version 15.46 and that the version 15.45 was fine. So, I found those old drivers and installed them. Before turning off I installed Puppy Linux on my USB drive.

After the installation of drivers I rebooted but again black screen. So I started booting into Puppy and it worked, no problems. I was using puppy for a couple of times when, after one turning on, the ASUS logo appeared and so I was able to get into Windows again. This time, I updated the drivers on Intel 520 via the "Update driver..." option in Device manager, but right after the update procedure was done, the screen flickered and turned black. I made no actions since and I am using Puppy for now, since my external screen is at my office.

I'll write more if I manage to do something... Hope my ramblings help someone.
