So, the original battery in my Asus laptop was losing some life. Not too terrible, but enough that I felt I needed a spare battery just in case. I have room in the bottom of my laptop bag, so why not?

I got an aftermarket one from Amazon a few months ago and it worked perfectly. It had greater capacity and worked well for when switching back and forth between the Aftermarket and OEM batteries. It charged well and was find for the longest time.

However, I lent my laptop to a friend for a while when I was out of school with the Aftermarket. I have a desktop, so didn't really need it. Unbeknownst to me, they left the laptop plugged in basically all the time. Now, I didn't think much of it. We always hear old wive's tales of not leaving it plugged in and letting it go through its cycle in order to keep its lifespan.

Upon receiving the laptop, the Aftermarket battery will no longer charge. The laptop battery indicator blinks, saying "Plugged in, not charging." However, the battery still held a charge. I used it for a while on the battery, but it always stayed at 80% and never dropped until the battery finally died. I plugged the laptop in and it now says 0%, as well as not charging. The OEM battery still charges just fine, but as stated before, it's lost some capacity over the years. In addition, the return window for the battery is long gone.

So, my question is then, do I have a bricked battery even though it was holding a charge before the laptop itself stopped charging it? Is there any way to charge the battery without plugging it into the laptop? Or is there any way to fix the charging issues with settings or something I'm missing?

TL;DR - aftermarket battery no longer charging after being plugged in constantly for a while, OEM battery still charges. Says "0%, plugged in, not charging." Battery can definitely still hold a charge, laptop just won't charge it.

Solution
It is possible the battery (batteries) are bad and your friend who used the laptop left it plugged in all the time because it stopped working on with just the battery. Aftermarket batteries are hit or miss.

I'm not sure that I mentioned, but the battery light indicator still blinks and will not charge the battery even if the laptop is off. So it's also not the problem that the charger doesn't have enough power to charge the extra capacity battery and run the laptop.
