I just got a Switch and plan on hooking it up to one of my monitors. I will be using the HDMI port on my main monitor for the Switch so its possible to have sound through the monitor speakers but I want it to come through my headset on PC so there is no feed back through my microphone with friends.

In the end I want to be able to use Discord for voice chat via PC and hear them while I can also hear the sounds from the game. What is the best way to accomplish this? Is it just as simple of taking a 3.5mm jack from the monitor into the PC? Would one sound source overrule another?

If you have a stereo in(usually blue) on the back of your computer, use that for the switch. You can control the volume in mixer settings in the operating system. If you don't have that, DO NOT PUT IT IN THE MIC, that would be unacceptable for the hardware, even though it should be able to take the load.

There is this https://www.amazon.com/Griffin-Technology-iMic-original-Adapter/dp/B003Y5D776

which functions as a stereo in, and if you didn't have it, you could use a device like this
