I used my laptop yesterday with no issues, shut down as usual, etc. Went to turn it on today and it wouldn’t boot…at all. The power button lights up, the HDD indicator light and keyboard backlight come up very briefly then go back off, and the screen stays black. I have to hold the power button down to turn it back off, then try again with same results.

Even though I noticed the HDD light wasn’t on, I thought it could possibly be just my screen not working so I plugged it in through HDMI to my TV and powered it on. It booted up perfectly just like it normally should. I unplugged HDMI and it’s fine. But if I try to restart or shut down and try to turn back on, the same issue happens again and I have to plug it back into HDMI to get it to boot at all. I’m using it right now, but only after using HDMI first as described.

This is the weirdest issue I have ever seen and cannot find anything online about it, expect for a couple of similar (not same) issues. I know people have had issues with their screens not working and using HDMI for picture, but my laptop will literally not boot unless it is plugged into HDMI before powering on. Like I said, after it boots, I can unplug the HDMI and use it normally, but it’s really an issue for me. Just started today.

Laptop specs
ASUS Rog G75VX
Windows 10
16GB Ram
1TB HDD
Nvidia GeForce GTX 670MX (3GB)
Intel Core i7-3630QM (2.4GHz)

Things I’ve tried with no luck:
Booting strictly from battery
Booting without battery, strictly from power supply
Reseating RAM
Removing HDD and trying to just get it to boot into BIOS (still nothing here, not even boot into BIOS)

The ONLY things I’ve done recently was get EVGA Precision X, which I literally just installed yesterday. I messed around with some settings in there but then set it back to default (didn’t mess with voltage, just +135MHz on GPU core and +1400MHz on memory). I applied those settings, but again, I set it back to default. When the issue started today, I thought that might be something that could have caused it so I uninstalled EVGA, hoping it would fix it, but no such luck.

I’m really scratching my head here and hoping someone could shed some light on the issue, maybe someone has experienced it before? Again, I think it’s important that you know that the laptop will literally not boot without being connected to HDMI and external TV, it’s not just the screen.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, you have no idea. This is a great laptop and I’ve never had a single issue with it until today.

MERGED QUESTION
Question from sammyboyd999 : "HELP! Laptop won’t boot unless connected to external monitor/TV."

Update: I just tried taking the hard drive out and plugging in HDMI to boot to BIOS, and it did, but only on the external TV screen, nothing on the laptop screen, which I thought was weird. Anyway, I reset default settings in BIOS (read it could help somewhere), and then turned it off and put hard drive back in. Same results. I’m getting nowhere here.

After paying more attention to boot up while plugged into HDMI, I noticed that the laptop screen doesn’t show the first loading screens when booting up, like the ASUS Rog loading, Windows logging in, etc. It only shows on the laptop screen after it’s fully booted into Windows.

This might be worth trying.

Boot it up with the hdmi connected. Now rather then pulling out the hdmi cable - disconnect it by using windows commands. Win+p, pc screen only, - does that enable the laptop screen and turn off the signal to the hdmi external? If so, remove the hdmi cable, reboot and the laptop screen should work.

Tried this, but when I select the laptop screen only, I get nothing on the actual laptop screen. Switched it back to dual or shared or whatever it was called and it was back up on both screens (laptop and TV).
