Broken AC Adapter?

-If unplugged, battery holds a charge and laptop stays powered until battery runs out of juice.

-If plugged in, and battery is out, laptop is powered by charger, but is very sensitive. A nudge or my cat touching the wire stops energy transfer and the laptop powers off.

-If plugged in, and battery in, same deal as before. But now the battery's charge can keep it on when the charger messes up.

-When the charger is nudged and stops working, giving the AC adapter brick (don't know correct term) a shake or dropping from a couple inches will bring back the energy transfer and will start charging again.

So I think somethings loose/broken in the AC adapter brick which is making it very sensitive to being broken. If anyone is wondering the pins on both the laptop port and the charger tip are straight and don't wobble.

Am I right in thinking that I need a new charger?

Yeah, I had similar with a Sony laptop but I took the power adapter apart. The soldering inside was dreadful and the mains socket was coming away from PCB. Some new solder, heat gun glue and tape and it was better than new. If not confident with this type of DIY just buy a new one.
