i have recently upgraded my mid 2010 17" macbook pro's hard drive to ssd (Crucial 275 GB Internal SSD - MX300) and would like to upgrade the cd drive to 1tb ssd. Do they have to be the same type of ssd? would I have to get crucial again or can i get samsungs 850 pro ssd? also would upgrading the cd port to ssd make my machine faster?

No. They need not be the same SSD. U can have a different one.

About the speed. MacBook pro 2010 will be having SATA 2 on the CD drive. If you buy a SATA 3 SSD, the speed will not be as much as that of the main HD slot, even though the speed will increase than the normal HD since SATA 3 is backward compatible.

Buy a good compatible caddy for your SSD.

Good Luck :) Peace.
