HDMI might only support 60Hz or up to 120Hz. Mini-DisplayPort should do it at 144Hz 1080p. However, it is also dependent on the specific monitor you will use, and you need to read the fineprint of such monitor as to what connections it supports 144Hz (usually, it is DVI-DL and/or DisplayPort, but not all.)

Hello, I appreciate your response greatly. With the laptop that I linked, will a mdp--> dp connector be enough to connect to a monitor with 144hz and a display port input?

Yes, an mDP to DP cable will do 144Hz at 1080p (both are technically the same pinouts/electronics but only the size of the physical connectors are different).

The link for the cable says it's out of stock, so, here's a new one (in stock): https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Rankie-Plated-DisplayPort-Resolution/dp/B00YOQYQWY/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1499567852&sr=1-3&keywords=mini+dp+to+dp

As for the 2 monitors you linked, yes, both of those monitors support 144Hz at 1920 x 1080 resolution but only using DisplayPort input. For the Acer, it'll only reach 120Hz if DVI is used and only 60Hz if HDMI is used. For the Viewsonic, it'll only reach 120Hz if HDMI is used.

speaking from experience a normal mini dp to dp cord will NOT do it.i can get 144hz on my fps counters but everytime a load happens I drop to 0 with insane amounts of lag I am currently attempting to do figure out correct way to do this but I can attest that a normal cable is not the answer

HDMI 2.0 Should be able to support 1080p 144hz. I'm using an Asus VG278Q @144hz connected to my Dell G7's Hdmi Port. I made a custom resolution in the Nvidia Control Panel to get the desired refresh rate, then made another custom refresh rate using CRU.
