Speaker background noise - normal?

Hi folks,

I just bought Edifier R1280T 2.0 speakers for my laptop, and noticed that when I turn on the speakers there is a slight noise/hiss/background sound... is this normal for speakers or should they be completely silent? Any tips to reduce this sound?

Any feedback much appreciated!

A certain amount of noise is normal.
Do the speakers make the noise without any input connections?
If they don't then the noise is from the laptop not the speakers. Adjust the volume of the laptop down and the speaker up.
If they do then do the reverse.

I tried lowering the volume on the laptop and putting the speaker volume up but there was still background noise.

Any suggestions? :)
