disc is blank. I was going to backup some pictures on my laptop by putting them on a dvd recordable disc. but I try to do that and dialog box pops up saying there is no disc in drive when there is

try a pre-recorded disk to see if still have that issue.

look in device manager to see if there is an exclamation mark on that drive as I think the laser read head of the drive is dead.

I done a troubleshooting from the control panel, and it said that NO dvd playback device was detected!! and I looked at device manager and it says its installed, and there is no exclamation mark there, also I did another trouble shooting and it said windows update was set to not install drivers. how do I fix this??

did you try to uninstall the drive in device manager & restart the laptop so that windows can find new hardware & load it's own driver? do you have or can borrow a windows disk to see if your laptop will boot from that disk or just continue loading into your windows as that will tell if the drive is dead or not?
