looks like battery died while it was in my backpack. Now, when booting the laptop, following message comes up.

Reboot and select proper boot device.
Or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key.

When I enter boot menu in bios, "boot configuration" option is unavailable. I see the option, but it's greyed out and i can't enter it.

I did try restore defaults, and I did make sure physical connection is ok.

Tried using linux installation dvd, but it wouldn't boot and still can't access boot configuration.

Thought I might take it to somebody to do hard reset for bios, but they said that battery trick doesn't work anymore.

How screwed am i?
Thanks!

Sounds like your drive may not be registering correctly.

It could have just been jarred and is not connecting properly. You would have to open it up, disconnect the drive and then reconnect it to be sure. (If you feel comfortable doing so.)

Or it could be the drive needs to be replaced. Sometimes a small amount of jarring can ruin a drive.

NOTE: If the device is under warranty, contact the manufacturer before doing any work on it.
