* Not laptop related but there was no desktop PC category option...*

Had been using blue/white VGA to hook up PC to TV
Worked fine for years.

Recently changed to HDMI.

the display is fine, but no sound.

Checked online, 99% of fixes say make sure HDMI is default sound setting.

It is. Now at a loss and I've set everything in sound/ control panel as guided and it still doesn't work.

What else can I try? (basic terminology please) .

Another stupid question:
Just how did you get sound before - from the computer's built-in speaker, or from 2 external speakers (and possibly a subwoofer)?

I'm rather assuming the latter, because VGA doesn't (normally) transfer sound. In that case you have to unplug the speaker cable and plug it back in. Then check the Sound settings again and make sure you have selected the icon showing external speakers (it usually simply says 'Speakers').

You should also find the TV remote and open the on-screen menu and locate the Input ports/channels. This may take a while if you have never done this before, but eventually you should come across something like 'Display port' or 'Display input' - a list that says VGA and HDMI and possibly SCART...
First, a few stupid questions, but I have to ask:
- Are you using the same computer and the same TV?
- Are you using the computer's HDMI port (the built-in array on the backpanel) or did you install a graphics card?

Now, have you made the appropriate changes to your TV input settings? The TV needs to be told that you're using a different port now. This also concerns the TV audio settings.

Hi
Yes it is the same PC and TV
HDMI plugged it in at the back next to the VGA port I used previously
I haven't changed anything inside the pc
I haven't changed any TV settings from previous use, it has recognised the display as I am using it right now to type this but no sound - I don't know how to change TV settings for this.
