I am very much in the infancy stages of brainstorming a bios mod that would allow me to overclock my i7-4200mq to push a 4.0ghz mark. As this is just a brainstorm ,where would one theoretically start research to learn the teqhniques to accomplish such a radical and dangerous modification?

Please don't take this wrong,
I have doubts you can make the 4200 MQ CPU overclock in the first place, normally the only CPU with K are overclock-able.
In theory, if you can read the HP bios (i.e. not encrypted), with specialized bios chip reader/encoder, use a hex editor and hack/mod the bios and flash it back, and hope you did all this without a fault and therefore not bricking your laptop,
I would say the odd of success are less then 5% in your favor, but don't let me stop you :)

Why not try intel extreme utility and see if you can do it just with it without modding anything. Btw, your cpu name is wrong, either it is i5 4200m or i7 4700mq.

my apologizies it is a 4700mq. I have just seen a forum and record posted where someone modded their bios and was abpe to unlock the multiplier or modify the microcode to make the chip think its a i7 extreme so as to overclock past the stock boost to around 4.5ghz. I was looking to hit around 4.0ghz. But seeing the risk and the success rate ill pass. Not to mention i doubt a vaccum cooler, thermal paste, and a laptop cooling pad would be enough. Ill set it at 3.5ghz -3.7ghz and be happy. Not to mention its whats going to be running my external egpu setup....my hp has no whitelist and thats my real project ...actually what the OC was for. But yah many reasons fir not taking a risk....mainly 1200$ pc and 425$ egpu setup. Thanks for advice and time.

also it is a haswell....i saw the post on this site to techinferno.com where someone modded the bios amd microcode on the 4700mq (also found in Alienware and Msi Laptops) to make it push what the i7 extre me model would in ghz.

https://www.techinferno.com/index.php?/forums/topic/963...

To answer Mister_MO I wa ted to make the multiplier higher than 35. I believe it can push 3.7ghz across one core. I just mailed my dad my hp 15 i3 and hes sending me his hp17 envy i7 .....so im actually just trying to do research and push the limits of it as this will be the best cpu ive had.....so mainly the bios mod was more of a microcode modificatio that just happens to live in the bios. It was really in the name of having desktop performance.....im setting up a mini pci-e express extenal graphics card July 3rd for my 27th and wanted to kinda feel like i waz behind a desktop ....and i always wanted an i7 extreme. idk really the name of the game was just tinkering and tying to push the envolope like i do with my Rooted Android .

I'd probably suggest you start over at BIOS mods...

That's ultimately what they do there. I could be wrong, but I don't think there's going to be much assistance for it on this forum. I'm not even 100% sure it's not against the forum rules come to think of it. :??:
