Is the Windows Defender Security Center enough for security?

Hey Tomshardware. So i usually download Avast as one of the first things when downloading a new PC. I'm just wondering since Windows 10 had some sort of update to ''Windows Defender Security Center'' if it's okay to just stick to that? Or is it still required to download Third Party Anti-Virus for optimal security?

My PC is mostly used to Surf the web and play games.

What would be best to do?

IF.. If you are behind a firewall and IF you are not a stupid user... sort of.

I have it running and Avast free... Ohers like others... Just my choice

surprised you dont have issues running 2 antivirus programs.usually defender will shut down if it detects another av.avast is a very well respected av.windows defender,not so much.i run avast with the paid version of malwarebytes,but you could get by with the free version.just do regular scans as the free version doesnt have realtime scanning.it is highly recommended to only run one av.

Thanks for those of you who mentioned us. I know that many users prefer to use more than the "basic" AV included with Defender. Avast as an example goes way beyond traditional protection -- we can protect against ransomware, malware, etc. as well as traditional viruses.

You can find more information here and here as well, and I recommend you check out independent testing sites like AV-comparatives for real world testing by third parties to see how Avast (and other solutions) perform for detections vs. Defender.

In the end, the choice is up to you!

If all your doing is light surfing and playing games then I would say yes Windows Defender is ok. If your doing lots of downloading, pirating, or online purchases I would get one of the free versions of Avast, Avira, Avg, or Adaware. All seem to work fairly well.
