Is it worth paying extra for the 6gb version rather than 3gb?

Solution
Peoples perception of what a high end model is vary mate

How can you really class a 1060 as high end when there are 3 stronger models available ?
What would they be classed as ??
Extra high end
Extra extra high end
Ultra high end ??

Its a moniker given to them by the masses mate , ignore it.

I myself ??

On a laptop level I'd class the 1060 mobile as bottom of the high end , desktop top of the midrange.

Mainly because there is a big performance difference between a laptop & desktop with similar specs.

A desktop with a kaby i7 + fully fledged 1080 vs a laptop with the i7 you're looking at & a 1080 mobile GPU ?? Close to 50% performance difference cross the board .

That's what you put up with when you go for laptop over a desktop...

Only if you're playing on higher res than 1080p. 3GB for 1080p games should be enough for max details. But if the 6GB version is not much more expensive, go for 6gigs, it has a few %% better performance than the 3gigs one.

Of course not, if you want future-proofness, you have to look at high-end products like GTX1070 or 1080, coz GTX1060 is only a mid-range GPU. It is recommended to upgrade the GPU every 3 years if you want to enjoy smooth experience, because there is no such thing as future-proof - the technologies are evolving and after maximum of 5 years your rig will be outdated so badly. I've personally bought a GTX760 2GB 3.5 years ago, which is a middle-range card just like GTX1060 is now and after 3.5 years with a middle-level card i can say that it was perfect for the first 2 years and later i noticed how i turn all the settings down and even reduce the resolution to 720p for the latest games like Doom2016 to achieve 60fps. Middle range GPUs age terribly, although my beast CPU (i5-4690K) still amazes me with the performance.

It is. GTX1060 is like the upper side of the 'mid-range', but by any means it cannot be called high-end :| A laptop with GTX1060 inside is a great thing overall.

I forgot to say that when i bought my 760, the first two years were the only years i was a hardcore gamer, after all, i did not play so many games. I mean, the mid-range GPU i have right now fulfilled my needs - i've completed all the games i wanted to and then i grew up :D Of course having a high end product would've been a better choice, but overall it was a great deal. So if you expect to use that laptop for gaming for like 5 years straight, the gtx1060 won't offer so much future-proofness, but if you know you won't be able to game so much after a few years (for example university etc.), then a GTX1060 will provide you with a great experience.

so if I buy a laptop with i7-7700hq cpu and gtx 1060, it will not be able to run newest game in 2-3 years?

because of the cpu or gpu?

The 3gb 1060m has reduced texture mapping units so its a weaker card aswell as having half the vram.

Go for the 6gb if at all possible.

Also bear in mind there is a low power/low clocked version of the mobile 6gb (called the max q) which is a lot weaker.

Do your homework on the laptop specs before buying.

You don't want the 3gb or the max q chipset models.

With the full power 6gb I'd say you'll still be able to game in 3 years , just at reduced settings.
Laptops are never ever properly future proof

2 years time someone with a desktop can replace the GPU for $300.
A laptop ?? Its either a new 1k+ laptop or reduce gaming resolution or settings.

That said If I were buying a gaming laptop the i7+1060p is exactly what I'd buy myself.

2 years ago there was NO mobile gaming solution that came anywhere near that performance level for any kind of reasonable money.

I consider my £3k AV setup at home fairly high of the mid range , someone with a £10k would call it a budget system ;-)

Very nice explanation mate. So right now I found couple of laptops that are all in price range from 1250 to 1400 pounds ( 1430 euro to 1600 euros) they all have i7-7700 cpu and gtx 1060 gpu.

My question is:
1. Do I pay more to get 16 gb ram?
2. Do I need 3gb VRAM or 6gb VRAM? (future included)
3. Will I be able to run upcoming games in 2-3 years? ( high / very high / ultra video settings)
4. If I pay 1400 pounds or 1600 euros for a laptop, what will the same laptop cost in 2 years?
5. Should I wait for price drop on 1070 gtx laptops?
6. How much more is a laptop with i7-7700 cpu and gtx 1070 better than same CPU with gtx 1060? in %
