i3 better than i7?

I can choose between an i3 7100u laptop or an i7 5500u laptop for about the same price.

Apart from the cache size (which I understand is significant) is there any reason to go for the i7? What kind of activity will show it to have any benefit over the i3?

According to the first link, the i3 is much faster. But according to the 2nd, the i7 is slightly faster. But they are compared from the same site, which makes absolutely zero sense to me!?

I have both an i5-4210u (1.7/2.7 turbo - usually only goes up to 2.3 because both cores are loaded) and an i7-5600u (2.6/3.4 turbo). The newer architecture and 1 GHz clock speed difference makes a huge difference in everyday usability (web browsing, multitasking, etc). I wish the 4210u was at least the i7 from that generation.

The i3 is a newer architecture and may have some different features. Better integrated graphics and more power efficient.

The i7 will turbo boost over its base clock speed, so it is the faster of the two.

Also, yes, desktop i3's are VERY fast these days. Laptops not so much, but they're definitely a lot more usable than they used to be.
